Principals Corner

Greetings Margaret Keating School Community,

Welcome to the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year! I hope that you have had a restful and enjoyable summer. It is this time of year that I become excited for the students and staff to return as we continue to make preparations for the upcoming year. Margaret Keating has seen some staffing changes over the summer, and because of a change in school leadership please allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Kristian Stremberg and fortunate for me I was born and raised here in Del Norte County. After graduating from Del Norte High School I attended the University of California at Davis. There I majored in political science and history, graduated and joined the Peace Corps where I lived Jamaica for two years. It was the Peace Corps that inspired my passion for teaching as I managed an organic agriculture grant that was integrated into an elementary school, and also taught an early morning literacy class. As a school community we had an acre farm with vermal composting and slaughter chickens. After the Peace Corps and living in Jamaica I moved back to California and decided that a career in education was my path, so I went back to school to earn my teaching credential and masters degree. I quickly found a job teaching down in inner city Oakland and spent eight years teaching Language Arts and Social Studies 7th-12th grade, eventually moving into teacher leadership. While I loved teaching in Oakland and miss my old school community, students, and friends deeply, the endless cement, and traffic were always a poor substitute for the redwoods, the ocean, and river. Last year I decided to move back home and after finishing a year as an instructional coach in the district office applied and successfully interviewed for my position here at MKS. It is a great honor to lead Margaret Keating and I promise equal passion and work ethic. I have worked hard to always keep my student’s needs at the core of what I do, and MKS will see no less from me.

We are continuing with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports or PBIS at Margaret Keating School this year. PBIS and Margaret Keating promote students and staff to work on the traits of safety, respect and responsibility. It is our hope that every individual connected to MKS implements these traits throughout the school year, and beyond. There are PBIS posters throughout the hall as reminders to our students and a PBIS board outside the office. Be sure to check them out when you visit. Be safe, be respectful and be responsible.

For parents and students to stay informed about all things MKS we will be beginning the school year much like last year. Our wonderful secretary Nancy Bessette will continue to send needed school updates and bulletins home. If you need any school  information feel free to email her at nbessettee@dnusd.org or call her here at school at: 707.464.0340. I am happy to announce the school district has invested in furthering it’s communication offerings and over the next couple months will be developing School Messenger which will allow families to opt into text messaging as a way to get news about the school.

The daily start time at Margaret Keating will begin at 8:15 AM and conclude at 2:30 PM. The school is still serving breakfast at 7:25 am until 8:10 am. Our first day of school is Monday, August 27th and will be a full day for students. Please speak with Nancy if you have any questions about the bus schedule.

I strongly encourage you to attend our back-to-school night on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.

If you have any questions for me or need to make an appointment to see me please contact our office at (707) 464-0340 or email me at kstremberg@dnusd.org. You may also choose to stop into the office weekdays between 7:20 AM and 3:30 PM. As a reminder when reporting student absences, please contact the office as soon as possible as an absence occurs. You may telephone, email, or write a note. On behalf of the Margaret Keating  School staff, welcome to a new school year! We are excited about all of the positive things this year will hold for your students!

Sincerely,

Kristian Stremberg
