Principals Corner

To The Margaret Keating Elementary School Community,

The 2017-2018 school year has arrived. I am brimming with optimism and excitement for the wonders this year will hold for our children, and all of us in this learning community. As a reminder school begins on August 28. Breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the first bell of the new year ringing at 8:10 a.m. Families are welcome to join us, donuts will be provided for our adult guests. If you are able, you are encouraged to stay as I will have some general information for the upcoming school year. You are further encouraged to join your student and their class for our “Rules Rodeo” which will begin at 8:30 a.m. This series of brief lessons serve as a reminder, or introduction, to the rules we follow at Margaret Keating.

Building upon past successes, and evolving for the future, our school has undergone a number of changes this year. For starters, you will notice several new faces on campus. Margaret Keating is welcoming three new teachers (grades 1, ¾, and ) as well as a new member of our After School Program.

As always, our school team is working feverishly to improve the learning experience for our students. After a thorough selection process, we will be utilizing new English Language Arts curriculum. Students in TK-2nd grade will have access to the “Wonders” curriculum. Our 3rd-5th graders will be using National Geographic’s “Reach for Reading” program. The 6th grade will use StudySync. These programs have received positive reviews and we believe they will provide a wonderful platform for student success.

Another exciting aspect to this coming school year is our renewed emphasis on science. A focus on Environmental Science and STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) projects provide the avenue for the hands-on learning so many students find powerful. Through such lessons, we also strive to help them understand their world.

We will be continuing the monthly awards assemblies in each classroom this year. Larger whole school assemblies will be held at the end of each trimester. We fell short of our attendance goal of 97% last year, and will be adjusting the incentives for student attendance. Good attendance can be maintained in all but the most extreme circumstances, and is a powerful indicator of student success. We must all help our students be on time and ready to learn each day.

I continue to feel privileged to be a part of this community, and the lives of our students. It is the combined efforts of each of us that lead to happy, safe, and productive young people. I am inspired by the recent rise in opportunities for our young people outside of school. I am also grateful for the support my team and I receive when we need to discuss your student. I look forward to furthering our combined efforts this school year. Please feel welcome to contact me regarding concerns or ideas related to our students, and certainly consider discussing opportunities to volunteer and make our school that much stronger.

 Thank you

 Mr. J. Williams, Principal
